The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported that at least 186 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel and Lebanon since the war began in October 2023, making it the deadliest period for journalists since the organisation began collecting data in 1992. Most of the victims have been Palestinians in Gaza.
The CPJ accuses Israel of directly targeting and killing 20 journalists and media workers. Any deliberate attack on a civilian could constitute a war crime, according to legal experts. Israel, which has refused to allow international media into Gaza, denies the accusation.
Among those killed were six media workers whose stories have been highlighted by the CPJ. They include journalists from both international and local news organisations, some of whom were high-profile veterans, while others were newcomers to the profession.
The war was triggered by Hamas's incursion into Israel on 7 October 2023. Since then, more than 60,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israel's continuing offensive, according to Palestinian authorities, though other sources put the toll higher.
