A Union Pacific worker found the deceased individuals in the boxcar. Police and firefighters later confirmed the deaths, said Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza. The cause of death has not yet been determined, and the investigation remains ongoing, Baeza added. No survivors were found at the scene.

The incident echoes past tragedies involving migrants near the border, including a 2022 case where 53 people died in an abandoned tractor-trailer with a malfunctioning air conditioning system on the outskirts of San Antonio.
