Six people have been arrested after a 'brawl' broke out at Epsom Racecourse during the Derby. Footage of the huge fight on Saturday was shared on social media, with officials stating that anti-social behaviour “has no place” at the venue.
A crowd of 28,500 on the Surrey Downs saw Christmas Day claim Derby glory in the wind and rain – the highest attendance for the premier Classic since 2022. The King and Queen were also present, making the trophy presentation to winning trainer Aidan O’Brien, jockey Ronan Whelan, and owners Coolmore.
Incident Details
Footage posted online appears to show a fight breaking out inside a stand at the course. Security teams and police on site responded quickly to the incident, according to a spokesperson for Epsom Racecourse, which is owned by Jockey Club Racecourses.
“This matter is now being dealt with by Surrey Police so it would not be appropriate to comment further, other than to say that this sort of behaviour has no place at our racecourse,” the spokesperson added.
Police Response
Surrey Police said in a statement: “At around 5:50pm on Saturday, 6 June, officers were called to reports of a fight within the racecourse at the Epsom Derby. Six people were arrested in connection to the incident on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and affray. They have since been released on police conditional bail pending further investigation.”
The arrests come as a reminder of the importance of maintaining order at major sporting events. Authorities have not released further details about the individuals involved or the circumstances that led to the altercation.
