Two sisters were caught on video grinning and giggling as police arrested them for the brutal stabbing death of a mother of five in Del Rio, Texas. Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, and Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, were charged with murder after Caroline Peña was stabbed multiple times in broad daylight on June 25, 2026.
Arrest and Charges
According to the Del Rio Police Department, officers responded to Val Verde Regional Medical Center at approximately 2:10 p.m. after reports of a woman with multiple stab wounds. The assault occurred in the 800 block of East 10th Street. Peña was transported to a San Antonio medical facility for emergency treatment but succumbed to her injuries around 9 p.m. that evening.
At about 4 p.m., police located and arrested the Diaz sisters without incident. A third suspect, Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was also arrested in connection with the murder. All three were charged with murder and transported to the GEO Correctional Facility pending magistration.
Disturbing Behavior During Arrest
Video footage filmed outside the suspects' home showed Kitty Diaz grinning as officers escorted her to a patrol car. Amaya Diaz was seen giggling after reportedly yelling at a camera, "Stop recording." Independent journalist Michael Elizondo, who captured the footage, told The New York Post: "I didn’t know what was going on, but I knew it must be serious. I saw the first girl going into the car, and I thought, ‘Whatever.’…But the second one caught my eye. That girl was in a happy mood…She was all smiling, goofing off like nothing happened."
Investigation Ongoing
No motive for the killing has been made public. Investigators have gathered surveillance video and interviewed numerous witnesses. The Del Rio Police Department continues to investigate the incident. The three suspects remain in custody.
