Seven people have been taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash closed the A96 in Aberdeenshire. The collision took place near Huntly by the Portsoy junction shortly before 7am on Wednesday, September 9.
Emergency response and casualties
Five ambulances, an air ambulance and two special operations response teams were dispatched to the scene, along with fire and police crews. Five patients were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, including two by air ambulance, and two were taken to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin.
The extent of any injuries is so far unclear. The vehicles involved in the smash and how many people are affected also remains unknown.
Road closures and diversions
Police have advised drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Traffic Scotland confirmed that northbound and southbound diversions are in place, and that emergency services remain at the scene three hours later.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The A96 is closed in both directions at Huntly due to a crash which officers were called to around 6.55am on Wednesday, 9 September, 2026. Motorists are advised to use another route."
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 06:54 to attend a three-car road traffic collision on the A96, north of Huntly. Five ambulances, an air ambulance and two special operations response teams (SORT) were dispatched to the scene. Five patients were transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary – two by air ambulance – and two patients were transported to Dr Gray’s Hospital."
