Seven arrested after fireworks disorder in Birmingham

Seven young people were arrested after fireworks were set off and pockets of disorder broke out in Birmingham city centre on Halloween, West Midlands Police said.

Officers responded to reports of fireworks being set off dangerously on Saturday night. The seven people, aged between 15 and 26, were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including assault, possession of fireworks and possession of an offensive weapon. All seven remain in custody for questioning.

Section 60 powers used

A Section 60 order was in place on Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday, allowing officers to stop and search people suspected of carrying weapons or fireworks. The arrests were made in and around Stephenson Street and Corporation Street.

Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce said: "We have had a robust plan in place for this weekend to deal with any disorder, including section 60 powers which allows us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds."

Safety warning

He added: "The safety of our communities is paramount, and we'll do all we can to ensure this. Misusing fireworks is not only dangerous: it's illegal and can lead to fines, arrest and criminal charges."

The force is working closely with local partners to respond to reports of anti-social behaviour, Joyce said. Anyone who witnesses fireworks being misused or any other form of anti-social behaviour is urged to report it to police online or by calling 101.
