A shooting at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas has sparked sharply divergent reactions from Republicans and Democrats. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that detainees were the victims, with one killed and two others critically injured. The shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The FBI recovered shell casings with “anti-ICE messaging” near the shooter, but officials have not confirmed the motive or corroborated ideological claims. The incident is being investigated as an act of targeted violence. DHS said the shooter “fired indiscriminately” at the facility, including at a van where the victims were shot.
Republicans quickly framed the attack as an assault on law enforcement. President Donald Trump blamed “Radical Left Democrats”, while Vice-President JD Vance called it an “obsessive attack on law enforcement”. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said rhetoric comparing ICE to the Gestapo had consequences. Texas Governor Greg Abbott termed it an “assassination” and vowed to continue immigration enforcement.
Democrats focused on the victims and called for gun control. Representative Marc Veasey, whose district includes the shooting site, criticised officials for not acknowledging the victims were detainees and accused both sides of inflammatory rhetoric. He urged an end to political “gamesmanship”, citing the earlier assassination of Charlie Kirk as a lesson unheeded.
The attack comes amid fears of a Trump administration crackdown on leftwing groups and censorship of critical commentary. Senator Ted Cruz, after initially blaming Democrats, later acknowledged the shooter’s motive was unknown. The FBI continues its investigation.
