Search for three people

The two women and a man from the Mercedes left the scene on foot before officers arrived. Extensive enquiries are ongoing, using specialist resources including air support and the dog unit, to trace them.

Images from the scene show a lorry stopped on a grass verge and several cars, some of which appear to be on their roof. Police with sniffer dogs were also pictured in the area.

Road closure and appeal

The road was closed to allow investigation work and re-opened around 7.05pm. The vehicles have since been recovered.

Inspector Thomas Mallinson said: "My thoughts are with the family of the person who died at this incredibly difficult time. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash, and it is vital we trace the three people who left the area before police arrived."

He appealed for witnesses, anyone with information, or those with dash-cam footage from the area to contact police. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting reference 0756 of September 7, 2026.
