A 38-year-old Scottish woman has been found dead inside a suitcase dumped in an abandoned building in Athens, Greece. Her remains were discovered by a homeless man in the Kypseli neighbourhood at around 1pm on July 18.
Discovery of the Body
The homeless man reportedly saw a human limb protruding from the suitcase after noticing a foul smell at 7 Evelpidon Street, a derelict building that had been unoccupied for two years. The woman is believed to have been dead for approximately eight days. Police found no visible wounds or clear signs of struggle on the body.
The woman had no identification on her. She is described as around 5ft 4in tall with reddish hair tied in a bun, wearing a T-shirt and black shorts with a French university insignia.
Investigation and Autopsy
An autopsy is due to be carried out in the coming days. Greek authorities have called in Interpol and US investigators to assist with the probe. DNA testing, notified by Interpol on Monday, confirmed the body belonged to a British woman. She is said to have travelled to Greece on June 29 via Cyprus after coming from the United States.
Police are speaking with anyone who may have come into contact with the woman before her death and are trying to establish her final movements. No suspect has been identified at this time.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are aware of the death of a Scottish woman in Athens and are liaising with authorities in Greece. Officers are providing support to her family in Scotland."
