School Lockdown After Gunshot in Leighton Buzzard

An investigation is underway after reports of a firearms discharge near a school in Bedfordshire prompted a lockdown and a police chase.

The incident took place just before 3.30pm on Wednesday on Grebe Drive in Leighton Buzzard. Bedfordshire Police described the event as "shocking." A lower school in the vicinity went into lockdown for a short period as a precaution.

Police Chase and Collision

Armed officers were dispatched, and a vehicle believed to be at the scene was identified. A pursuit followed along the A505, ending on Porz Avenue in Dunstable after the vehicle collided with an unrelated car. The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Three occupants of the suspect vehicle fled on foot. Two ran toward woodland near Nimbus Park; one was described as a black male with dreadlocks, wearing black clothing with white socks and black sliders. The third man ran in the direction of Lovett Way.

Appeal for Information

Detective Inspector Stephanie Garfitt of Bedfordshire Police said: "This was a shocking incident; the safety of the public is always our highest priority and we are following several lines of enquiry to find those involved." She added that the school carried out its safety procedures as a matter of course and that police would maintain a high visibility presence.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with doorbell or dashcam footage from Leighton Buzzard or Dunstable to come forward, quoting Operation Tanglewood.
