A 65-year-old man was found dead in a toilet at Schalke's VELTINS-Arena on Thursday, prompting an investigation by German authorities. The body was discovered by a cleaner during a routine inspection of the facilities, with police quickly cordoning off the area.
German outlet Bild reports that the man is believed to have suffered a medical episode before collapsing. He had attended an event at the stadium on Wednesday but was not reported missing until his body was found the following day. There is no suggestion of criminal involvement, but questions have been raised as to why his absence went unnoticed.
The man was a local resident from Gelsenkirchen. FC Schalke 04 released a statement expressing deep dismay and offering condolences to the bereaved. The club said it is supporting the police investigation with all available means and will not release further details at this time.
Schalke currently lead the German second division after being relegated from the Bundesliga in 2023. They have not played at home since a 4-1 win against Preussen Munster on April 19. Their next home game is against Dusseldorf in a week's time.
The VELTINS-Arena, which has a capacity of 62,271, has been Schalke's home since 2001 and hosted four matches during the 2024 European Championships, including England's group match against Serbia.
