Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that a huge fire which destroyed a warehouse in Salford is being treated as arson. The force believes it was a targeted incident.
Emergency services were called to the blaze on Bury New Road on Thursday morning (August 6), where the Marc Darcy suits showroom was destroyed. Firefighters remained at the scene for a second day after a large part of the building's structure collapsed.
Fire began in caravan
In an update issued today (August 7), police said the fire began in a caravan next to the building, then spread to the property and some cars parked nearby, causing 'extensive damage'.
Police responded to an alarm activation at the property at around 1.50am on Thursday, where they met crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service tackling the fire at the caravan.
Appeal for information
Detective Inspector Paul Davies from Salford CID said: "This was a huge fire that caused extensive damage to a commercial property and several vehicles. Thankfully, no one was injured in this incident. We’re treating this as arson and we’re appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have witnessed anything suspicious, to come forward."
He added: "We’re particularly keen to hear from anyone with CCTV, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage from the evening of Wednesday 5 August or Thursday 6 August that could assist our investigation."
At this stage, investigators believe this was a targeted incident and do not believe there is any wider risk to the public.
