Sabrina Carpenter has been granted a temporary restraining order against a man she claims has been stalking her and attempted to force his way into her Los Angeles home. The order, issued by the Los Angeles County Court on Monday, prohibits William Applegate, 31, from coming within 100 yards of the Hollywood Hills residence she shares with her sister and her sister's partner.
In a signed declaration, Carpenter described the alleged stalker's behaviour as a 'disturbing violation of safety and privacy'. She stated that on 23 May, Applegate approached her front door and tried to force it open, an incident she called 'deeply alarming'. Ring camera footage shows a man attempting to open the door before being confronted by a security guard, who ordered him to leave. Applegate allegedly refused, claiming the singer was expecting him – a claim the court documents describe as 'outrageous and entirely false'.
According to a detective assigned to the case, Applegate refused to leave until law enforcement arrived. He was arrested on suspicion of trespassing, a misdemeanour. Carpenter said Applegate returned to the neighbourhood two days later. It was later discovered that Applegate had been parking in the area since 20 April, choosing spots progressively closer to Carpenter's home.
Carpenter filed the civil harassment restraining order on 29 May, alleging that Applegate had been stalking her since at least 20 April. She expressed fear over what he might do if not restrained, calling his 'delusional insistence' that he knows her 'indicative of a dangerous, delusional and irrational fixation'. Detective Peter Doomanis of the Los Angeles Police Department noted that the pattern of conduct 'reflects the hallmarks of a fixated, obsessional individual' and poses a 'serious and escalating risk to victim safety'.
A follow-up court hearing is scheduled for 17 June, with a criminal court hearing for Applegate's trespassing arrest set for the following day.
