A homeless man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a pregnant woman and her partner in Melbourne's south-east. Ross Judd, 34, is accused of killing 39-year-old Athena Georgopoulos and a 50-year-old man at a home in Mount Waverley on Monday night.
During a hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, the police prosecutor requested a 10-week extension to prepare a brief of evidence, citing the complexity of the crime scene. 'It's a complex crime scene [with] a significant amount of DNA [to be examined],' she said. The prosecutor also noted that autopsies were required, adding: 'One of the people was pregnant and that has resulted in the delay.'
Judd's defence lawyer, Annie Allan, said it was her client's first time in custody and asked for him to see a prison nurse to follow up on medication. The accused, who wore a black T-shirt and had a short black beard and mohawk hairstyle, stared ahead during the hearing. When magistrate Johanna Metcalf outlined his next court appearance and asked if he understood, Judd replied, 'Yeah, I do.' He smiled when the magistrate granted a media application to access his charges but refused other materials.
Police were called to the property at 9.20pm on Monday after a neighbour heard yelling. A second call indicated the incident was 'more urgent', and officers arrived at 9.50pm to find the two bodies. Judd was later arrested at Westall railway station, about 6km from the home, with two large dogs.
Athena Georgopoulos's mother paid tribute to her daughter on Facebook, writing in Greek: 'These last days you were so happy, we dreamed together about our granddaughter who you would bring into this life and suddenly all was extinguished in one night.' Judd is due to appear in court via video link on 13 January 2026.
