Police divers have recovered the Audi A3 in which three teenagers died after it plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland city centre. The black hatchback was lifted from the water using a crane on Wednesday afternoon, in an operation that involved divers attaching a harness to the vehicle.
Car lifted from river
The car emerged from the river shortly after 1pm on Wednesday, upside down and showing damage to its front bumper and windscreen. Water cascaded from the Audi as it was held in mid-air during the recovery, which coincided with low tide.
A wide police cordon was held around Panns Bank, where the car was understood to have gone through a barrier and dropped into the river. The incident happened at around 1.30pm on Tuesday.
Arrest made
A 17-year-old boy who was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash has been arrested and remained in police custody. The teenager was among those in the car when it entered the water.
