The Queensway Tunnel is closed in both directions following a serious crash. Merseyside Police were contacted just before 1.05pm today, Tuesday August 11, after reports of a collision involving an off-road scrambler bike travelling from Birkenhead to Liverpool.
Emergency services at the scene
Drivers have been told to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident. A statement from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm emergency services are today, Tuesday August 11, dealing with a serious road traffic collision inside the Queensway Tunnel.
"We were contacted at just before 1.05pm following reports of a one vehicle collision involving an off-road bike on the Birkenhead to Liverpool carriageway.
"The tunnel is currently closed as the incident is being dealt with. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes. Updates will be issued when available."
Public transport disruption
ECHO reporter Megan Banner is at the scene, where 10 police cars are outside the Liverpool entrance to the tunnel. There are also possible delays and cancellations on public transport.
Mersey Travel shared advice for anyone travelling on nearby bus routes this afternoon. A statement shared on X said: "Due to a Police incident, Queensway Tunnel is closed in both directions. All @arrivanorthwest and @StagecoachMCSL.
"Cross River services will operate via Kingsway Tunnel until further notice. All Cross River services will be subject to delays and cancellations."
There is traffic on surrounding routes, with one driver informing the ECHO of congestion on the Wallasey Tunnel.
