A wounded Ukrainian woman with a bloodied face and bandaged head is among the latest victims of Vladimir Putin's war on Kyiv's civilians following overnight strikes on the capital. She survived a ballistic missile and drone attack on her apartment block in a residential area.
The attack highlights fears that US President Donald Trump may have followed through on his threat to stop sharing intelligence with Kyiv. Shelling is targeting non-combatants, a repeated pattern in Putin's attacks on Ukraine's cities and villages as he tries to force Kyiv to bend to his will.
Strikes kill and injure as districts lose power
As many as five of Kyiv's districts experienced blackouts and water supply issues, and public transport operates with disruptions. The latest attacks left at least three dead and 22 more people injured as rescue teams work to save other survivors.
In response, Ukraine fired close to 1,000 drones at Russia overnight after another night of strikes on Kyiv, amid suspicions America stopped sharing intelligence. At least 500 of the weapons targeted Moscow region, aimed at data centres and oil installations in defiance of Trump's orders against energy firms.
Zelensky condemns lack of warning
Ukrainian President Zelensky claimed the US stopped life-saving intelligence sharing on Russian attacks that gives civilians time to take shelter. America had warned it might cease sharing vital intelligence if Ukraine failed to stop its deep strike operations against Russian energy supplies earlier in the week.
The latest Ukraine attack also marked Kyiv's defiance of Trump's claims that his negotiators had struck an energy ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Rescuers recover bodies after apartment fire
On Tuesday evening, Kyiv locals were not warned of incoming missile attacks on homes and a power plant, killing a suspected three people and injuring another 13. The attack hit the capital at around 10:40 p.m., sparking fires across several districts.
In Desnianskyi district, a fire spread across apartments on the first through eighth floors before firefighters extinguished it. Rescuers recovered two bodies from the building and evacuated 16 residents, while other strikes caused fires and casualties throughout the capital.
Zelensky said: "Once again, no advance warning from our partners. The main target was energy infrastructure." He had said of an earlier strike: "Advance intelligence on Russian ballistic missile launches is critical to saving lives. Early warnings give people time to seek shelter and help prevent casualties. Normally, we receive advance warnings from our partners, which are crucial for our defense."
Airports closed as drones target Moscow
Ukraine's attacks on Moscow temporarily closed four airports in the region as Zelensky flew into the UK for meetings at 10 Downing Street. Moscow's defence ministry said at least 902 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russia overnight.
Trump claimed earlier this week that intelligence sharing had not stopped, saying: "We are helping them, and we are sharing intel. We want the war to end, so we're working with them and Russia on getting the war to end." He had claimed an energy ceasefire was in place between Ukraine and Russia, although it was broken within hours by the Kremlin attacking Ukraine's infrastructure.
Trump has tried to blame Ukraine for the sharp rise in fuel prices across America and has signed a deal with Russia to import diesel, whilst dropping sanctions. Today, Zelensky said Russia has launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones against critical infrastructure in Kyiv city, Kyiv region and Kharkiv.
He said: "Russia does not view the US President's statements as strong." He also reasserted Ukraine's determination to continue to defy Putin's full-scale invasion of his country, adding: "Peace can only be achieved through strength."
