Pupils evacuated as fire hits Viewforth High School kitchen

Pupils and staff were evacuated from a Scottish secondary school after a fire broke out in the kitchen. Two Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliances responded to Viewforth High School in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on the morning of Friday, October 2.

Electrical fire in kitchen

An alarm was raised around 10.30am after reports of an electrical fire within the school's kitchen. Firefighters at the scene worked to extinguish the blaze, which was described as "small." The extent of the damage has not been disclosed.

Pupils and staff from Viewforth High School and Rosslyn Special School were evacuated as a result of the incident. Photographs from the scene showed fire engines parked outside an entrance to the building.

Schools confirmed safe

Parents were notified by Fife Council in a message stating: "Earlier this morning, a small fire was detected in the kitchen area at Viewforth High School. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended promptly and extinguished the fire. Following a full assessment, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that both Viewforth High School and Rosslyn Special School are safe. Pupils and staff have returned to the buildings and normal school activities have resumed."

Fire crews depart

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 10.30am on Friday, 2 October, to reports of a small electrical fire within a building on Windmill Road, Kirkcaldy. Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the area, and firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. Crews left after ensuring it was safe."
