Police have issued a warning about the dangers of off-road e-bikes after a teenager was jailed for killing an 86-year-old woman. Billy Stokoe, 19, was riding a modified Sur-Ron Light Bee X bike when he struck Gloria Stephenson on a zebra crossing. He admitted causing death by dangerous driving.
Supt Billy Mulligan, who led the investigation, said the bikes are lawful only on private land but are increasingly seen on public roads. He urged the public to report dangerous riding, noting that many riders have no training, insurance, or licence. The bike can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds when modified.
Police used dashcam, doorbell, and CCTV footage to track Stokoe, who fled the scene but later handed himself in. Supt Mulligan praised the 'unsung heroes' who tried to help Mrs Stephenson. The force will destroy Stokoe's bike and said they 'make no apology for that'.
