West Mercia Police have confirmed that an 11-year-old girl who was reported missing on Sunday evening was later found dead in a park near the cricket ground in Elmley Castle, Worcestershire.
The girl was reported missing at around 11.20pm on Sunday (4 October). Her body was discovered in the park close to Elmley Castle Cricket Ground, and her family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
Investigation Underway
In an update on Monday, police said that the investigation is still in progress and that the girl's family continue to receive support from specially-trained officers.
Chief Inspector Daniel Pilkington said that 'the death of a young girl will be deeply upsetting for the local community' and that the police force's 'thoughts remain with her family and friends at this time'.
Appeal Against Speculation
He added: "Her death is currently being treated as unexplained, and we are carrying out enquiries to fully understand the circumstances and provide her family with the answers they deserve."
Pilkington also asked people not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding her death, saying: "This is an incredibly difficult time for her family, and I would urge everyone to be mindful of the impact that speculation could have on them."
Increased Police Presence
He noted that people may notice an increased police presence in Elmley Castle while enquiries continue, and reassured residents that this is part of the work to establish exactly what has happened. Officers will also be available to speak to anyone in the community who has concerns.
West Mercia Police said in their initial statement that an investigation has been launched and that enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death, which at this stage is being treated as unexplained.
