Police update after girl, 11, found dead in Worcestershire park

Police investigating the death of an 11-year-old girl whose body was found in a park in Elmley Castle, Worcestershire, have said they are not looking for a third party in connection with the incident.

The girl was reported missing at around 11.20pm on Sunday and was later found dead in the park near the cricket ground in Elmley Castle, near Pershore, West Mercia Police said.

Police statement on investigation

Officers said they were aware of “speculation” and the impact on the community, but that the girl’s death is being treated as unexplained while they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The force added that they are “not trying to identify any third party involved” and further details will be released when they are able to.

Chief Inspector Daniel Pilkington said: “Our thoughts remain with the girl’s family and friends at what is an incredibly sad and difficult time for them.

“We understand the death of a young girl will have caused considerable sadness and concern within Elmley Castle and the wider community. Officers are continuing to work to establish the circumstances surrounding her death and, while we keep an open mind as those inquiries progress, there is nothing at this stage to suggest there is any wider risk to the community.

“People may continue to see officers in Elmley Castle while this work takes place, and I hope their presence provides some reassurance to residents.”

Community reaction

The incident happened in a small village with just around 500 residents and located four miles from Pershore. Locals have expressed shock at the news.

Yesterday, when news of the incident first emerged, the district councillor for Elmley Castle, Beverley Hardman, said: “You can't believe something like this would ever happen. My reaction was one of complete shock.

“The people of Elmley Castle do things for the community, it's a very proud area. They get on with people and work together.

“We don't know the background to this but whatever the cause, it's not going to take the pain away for the family.”

Local resident Janet Kellitt added, as reported by the BBC: “I'm really shocked, it's such a quiet, lovely area so you just don't expect anything like this.

“I just can't believe it. It's just shock and you just think it can't be in Elmley Castle - there's only a few of us here.”
