Merseyside Police have cordoned off a children's play park in Litherland following reports of shots fired on Wednesday evening. Officers were called to Hapsford Road at around 9.45pm after residents reported hearing loud bangs and shouting. Five youths were reportedly seen heading towards the train station, some on foot and others on electric or push bikes.
Forensic teams in white coveralls were seen entering the park on Thursday morning, and a large police presence remained in the area. Matrix vans arrived at the scene around 10am, and police dogs were used in the search. House-to-house inquiries have been conducted, and CCTV footage is being reviewed for evidence of a firearm being used.
Residents described hearing what they thought were fireworks. One local said: 'I heard what sounded like some fireworks, and right after there was quite a large police presence. There was the most I've ever seen.' Another resident noted that police had 'sniffer dogs out around here, so it was a very strong police presence.'
The cordon affected the school run, with parents having to make detours to avoid the park. Merseyside Police have appealed for anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage to come forward. A spokesperson said: 'If you have any information about this incident, please contact us via our social media desk or website.'
