A man has been shot dead by police in Westminster after producing two knives when challenged by officers. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:27 pm on Sunday in Great Scotland Yard, is not being treated as terrorism.
The man was acting suspiciously when officers from the Met and City of London police confronted him. He produced two knives and was first hit with a stun gun before being shot by a firearms officer. Despite attempts to save his life, he was declared dead at the scene.
No police officers or members of the public were injured. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a mandatory investigation into the shooting, as required by law in England and Wales for any fatal police shooting.
The IOPC stated that officers involved will provide a full account within 48 hours, and the investigation will examine the man's health records to determine why he may have been carrying knives.
