A routine police operation in the serene Victorian town of Porepunkah descended into tragedy on Thursday, culminating in the fatal shooting of a man by officers.
The incident unfolded at a rural property on Raywood Court, where members of the Bright Criminal Investigation Unit were executing a search warrant just after 1 pm. The target of the operation was a 35-year-old local man, Dezi Freeman, who was wanted on outstanding warrants.
According to Victoria Police, the situation escalated rapidly upon their arrival. A police spokeswoman stated that "a police shooting occurred during the incident." Despite the immediate efforts of attending officers and paramedics to save him, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
