Fire crews battle blaze
Large flames were seen rising from the school building on Thursday afternoon, and thick plumes of grey smoke could be seen for miles around. Fire crews from more than 10 areas rushed to the scene to bring the fire under control.
Building collapsed
Drone images taken after the fire show that much of the building was completely destroyed, with large parts having collapsed.
Police investigation ongoing
A South Wales Police statement said: "South Wales Police was called at 12.30pm on Thursday afternoon to assist with a fire at the old Ysgol Y Graig primary school building in Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing."
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) reattended the site on Friday morning to continue with re-inspection, alongside the local council. Residents had previously been asked to keep all doors and windows closed due to the level of smoke in the area. The building has now been handed back over to the site owner.
