Police Officer's Basketball Game Contrasts With Clapham Violence
A Metropolitan Police officer was filmed playing basketball with young men on Clapham Common courts on Tuesday night, as nearby streets descended into chaos with mobs attacking emergency workers and looting shops. The video, circulating widely on TikTok, shows PC Kyp Kyriacou – known as the 'slam dunking police officer' – holding a basketball while a young man runs towards him, picks up the ball, and executes an impressive 360-degree dunk to cheers from onlookers.
Building Trust Through Sport Amid Tensions
PC Kyriacou, who serves in the Central South Local Neighbourhoods team, has utilised basketball for years to foster trust and rapport with young people in the community. The clip, posted by TikTok user @cb.wxrld with the caption 'I can't get arrested now' alongside hashtags including #uktiktok, has already garnered over 2,500 likes. Authorities emphasise there is no suggestion that any individuals featured in the basketball video were involved in criminal activities during the disturbances.
Mayor Khan's Diplomatic Push Against 'Propaganda'
Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan revealed he has urged British diplomats globally to help combat what he termed 'disinformation and lies' about London amplified by former US President Donald Trump. In a Reuters interview on Tuesday, Khan called on diplomatic staff stationed worldwide to actively counter propaganda from Trump, who has repeatedly criticised the Mayor as a 'terrible mayor' and made claims about London's crime rates and governance.
Khan, speaking after meeting with British diplomats, ambassadors, and high commissioners, acknowledged London is not perfect but asserted it remains a safe city – statistically safer than major American urban centres. He cited data showing London recorded its lowest per capita homicide rate since records began last year, alongside a decline in phone-snatching incidents during 2025.
White House Response and Ongoing Feud
A White House spokesperson responded to Khan's remarks by stating, 'Left-wing policies ... have made once-great cities like London unrecognisable.' The spokesperson added that President Trump is 'rightfully warning European leaders that Western civilisation will continue to erode if they don't quickly reverse course.' The public feud between Trump and Khan dates to at least 2015, when the Mayor condemned Trump's proposed travel ban on several majority-Muslim nations.
Clapham Businesses Brace for Further Unrest
Shopkeepers on Clapham High Street are preparing for potential further disturbances during school holidays, after the area was twice swarmed by hundreds of teenagers. Staff reported locking doors as youths ran amok on Saturday and Tuesday, part of an online trend where children arrange 'link-ups' via social media apps like TikTok and Snapchat before surging into shops and setting off fireworks on Clapham Common.
Eyewitness Accounts and Police Response
Sheikh Awais, an employee at Rooster Spot chicken shop, described '70 to 80 children' entering his establishment, with some behaving aggressively. Yash, working at Olive and Meze, witnessed fights near McDonald's and estimated around a thousand youths running through the streets. Businesses noted that food shops appeared particularly targeted, with a local McDonald's reporting food thefts.
The Metropolitan Police have implemented a 48-hour dispersal order and arrested six teenage girls following the unrest. Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond warned that events 'fuelled by online trends and viral content on platforms such as TikTok' can escalate rapidly, with participants risking criminal records that impact future employment and travel opportunities. Police are reviewing extensive CCTV and body-worn camera footage to identify offenders, with further arrests anticipated.
Similar Disturbances in Birmingham
Comparable scenes occurred in Birmingham city centre last Friday as schools broke up for Easter holidays. West Midlands Police confirmed a handful of arrests for public order offences, with officers working alongside local partners to disperse crowds and minimise disruption. The incidents highlight broader concerns about youth gatherings organised through social media during school breaks.
Khan emphasised that exposure to false claims about London on social media could deter tourism, investment, and study in the capital, potentially harming its economic prospects. The Mayor's meeting with diplomats included representatives from countries including the United States, United Arab Emirates, and Japan, alongside Metropolitan Police officials.
