A man armed with two knives has been shot dead by police in Westminster, London. The incident occurred at approximately 23:25 GMT on Sunday after officers spotted the man acting suspiciously near the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank.
According to Scotland Yard, when challenged, the man produced two knives. Armed officers from the Ministry of Defence Police, Metropolitan Police, and City of London Police responded. A Taser was deployed three times before a City of London Police officer fatally shot the man in Great Scotland Yard.
The London Ambulance Service confirmed the man's death at the scene. The incident is not being treated as terror-related, and no members of the public or police officers were injured. Inquiries are ongoing.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a mandatory investigation. IOPC London regional director Sal Naseem stated, 'Our thoughts and sympathies are with all of those affected by this terrible incident.' He added that investigators believe they know the man's identity but have not yet notified his next of kin.
Ken Marsh, chairman of the Met Police Federation, expressed support for the officers involved and called on the IOPC to bring the matter to a swift conclusion.
