Two police officers have been placed under investigation following allegations they posted inappropriate content on Instagram during the heated Super League encounter between St Helens and Hull KR.
The incident occurred during Friday night's match at Craven Park, where tensions ran high both on and off the field. According to reports, the officers involved allegedly shared content from the match on their personal social media accounts that has since been deemed unprofessional.
Internal Investigation Launched
Humberside Police have confirmed they've launched an internal misconduct investigation into the matter. A spokesperson for the force stated: "We are aware of a number of social media posts made by two of our officers whilst they were on duty at the Hull KR versus St Helens Super League game on Friday, May 31."
"The officers will be spoken to and the circumstances will be investigated to determine if there has been any misconduct. We expect our officers to behave professionally at all times."
Match Marred by Controversy
The social media controversy adds another layer to what was already a contentious fixture. The match itself saw St Helens emerge victorious with a 26-24 win over Hull KR, but the game was marred by several incidents that have since come under scrutiny.
The Rugby Football League (RFL) has confirmed it's reviewing an incident from the match, though it remains unclear if this is directly related to the police officers' social media activity.
Social Media Guidelines Under Scrutiny
This incident raises important questions about the boundaries of social media use for emergency services personnel while on duty. Police forces across the UK have increasingly specific guidelines regarding officers' conduct on social media platforms.
The investigation will likely examine whether the posts breached professional standards and if they compromised the officers' ability to remain impartial during the sporting event.
Both Humberside Police and the RFL have declined to comment further while their respective investigations remain ongoing.
