Police are searching for a driver who fled the scene of a five-car crash on the Felling Bypass near Gateshead International Stadium, where one vehicle flipped onto its roof. A woman in her 40s was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Crash on the Felling Bypass
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon shortly before 2.20pm in the area of Park Road, Gateshead. Emergency services attended and found the woman had sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening. She was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
The driver of one of the vehicles made off from the scene on foot before officers arrived. A section of Park Road is currently closed while vehicles are being recovered, and road users are advised to seek an alternative route.
Police appeal for witnesses
Northumbria Police have appealed for witnesses, especially those with dash-cam footage. A spokesperson said: "Just before 2.20pm today (Monday), we received a report of a road traffic collision in Gateshead. It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, five cars had collided in the area of Park Road, which resulted in one of the vehicles turning onto its roof."
The spokesperson added: "The driver of one of the vehicles made off from the scene on foot ahead of officers arriving. Enquiries are ongoing to locate them. Anyone with information should contact us via direct message on social media or submit a report form on our website. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and may have dash cam footage of the incident. Please quote the following reference number: NP-20260824-0486."
Ambulance response and ongoing investigation
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 2.20pm on Monday 24 August to reports of a road traffic incident on the Felling Bypass near Burlison Gardens, Gateshead. We dispatched an ambulance crew, a clinical team leader, and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene. One patient was taken to the QE hospital for further treatment."
A force spokesperson today confirmed that police were still seeking the driver who made off from the scene and investigations were still ongoing.
