Police divers were spotted searching the Leeds Liverpool canal in Bootle this week to recover items thrown into the water after officers arrested a man wanted on a breach of a suspended sentence.
The searches took place close to The Strand shopping centre from around 10am on Monday, August 26. Pictures seen by the ECHO show a North West Underwater Search and Marine Unit van parked up on Stanley Road on the bridge over the canal and a diver in the canal next to the footpath.
Arrest near the canal
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "At around 10.15am, officers sighted a person of interest near to the Leeds Liverpool canal in Bootle. He was detained nearby."
Following information suggesting that items were reportedly thrown into the canal, and with assistance from the NW Underwater Search and Marine Unit, phones were recovered for further analysis.
Man charged
Kevin Riley, 48, of Monfa Road, Bootle, has been charged with Breach of a court order and will next appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court today, Wednesday August 26.
