Two Dead After Stolen Car Drives Wrong Way on M60 During Police Chase

Two drivers have died following a crash on the M60 after a stolen car being pursued by police drove the wrong way along the motorway, the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Thursday night when a black BMW, spotted by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers on Altrincham Road in Baguley at approximately 22:15 BST, failed to stop. Officers pursued the vehicle onto the M56 and then the M60.

The BMW left the motorway at Junction 27 but immediately turned back onto the wrong side of the carriageway, heading towards oncoming traffic. It subsequently collided with a Vauxhall. The 18-year-old driver of the BMW and the 77-year-old driver of the Vauxhall were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The IOPC has launched an independent investigation, which began at 01:45. A spokesman appealed for witnesses, particularly those with dashcam footage, saying: 'We believe that there may be some witnesses travelling on the road network who may have witnessed the pursuit.'

He added: 'Sadly, two men have lost their lives as a result of this collision. Our thoughts are with their families at this time.'
