An open day at Xaverian College in Rusholme, one of Manchester's most prestigious sixth form colleges, ended in chaos on Saturday (October 10) after police were called to a large-scale disturbance.
Footage shared on social media shows police outside the 164-year-old college on Saturday afternoon. Clips widely shared on TikTok show groups of youths running across a large grassy area in front of a historic college building.
Incident details
The incident has been described by some as a 'mass brawl' between several males. Widespread social media reports that someone had a knife have been unconfirmed by Greater Manchester Police.
The force confirmed to the Manchester Evening News that officers were called to the college at about 1pm, around an hour before the event was due to finish. According to eyewitnesses, the event was cut short shortly after the incident.
College response
A GMP spokesperson told the MEN that officers were called to an 'ongoing fight between 10 males'. A spokesperson for Xaverian College said: "At the end of our college open day, staff responded very quickly to an incident involving visitors on campus. Greater Manchester Police attended and supported the college with no further action needed."
The spokesperson added: "Our next open day will go ahead as planned, with usual arrangements in place to ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all visitors, as this always remains our first priority."
The GMP spokesperson said no arrests had been made and that investigations were ongoing.
