Violent disorder erupted in Birmingham city centre on Bonfire Night, with police officers and patrol cars targeted by fireworks. Footage captured the incident in the Dale End area on Wednesday, 5 November, showing rockets being fired at West Midlands Police.
Police initially arrested four teenage boys on suspicion of violent disorder, later confirming over 20 arrests had been made. Officers seized weapons as they deployed Section 60 powers to stop and search individuals in the area.
Trouble began around 4pm, with a witness describing groups of yobs surrounding officers and shooting fireworks at them. The witness told BirminghamLive that Birmingham was becoming “a scary place to be.” Further fireworks-related disturbances occurred later in the evening, prompting additional arrests.
Inspector Matthew Minton stated: “We made 21 arrests overnight as violent disorder broke out where members of the public and our officers were attacked with fireworks. Fortunately, no-one has been seriously hurt. Behaviour like what we have seen overnight will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
