Police appeal after armed youths clash in violent Openshaw brawl

Greater Manchester Police have issued an appeal for witnesses after a large brawl involving masked youths with weapons broke out in Openshaw. The violent scenes unfolded on South Street in broad daylight at around 12.50am on Monday (September 28).

Police said a 'large group of youths' were involved, with many of them wearing balaclavas. Officers believe knives, bats and machetes were used as the disorder unfolded. The violence also flared up on Goole Street, Kellbrook Road, Herne Street Park and Abbeyfield Square.

Two taken to hospital and ten arrested

Two people were taken to hospital from the scene. One suffered 'significant but not life-threatening injuries', a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said. Ten males, aged between 17 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of assault. In an update issued today (October 1), police said they have all since been bailed with conditions.

Witness appeal and increased patrols

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and investigators are now seeking witnesses to come forward", a GMP spokesperson said. "Anyone who saw the moments leading up to the incident, or has any information, CCTV, mobile phone footage or dashcam footage is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 1526 of 28/09/26. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

A number of cordons were put in place in Openshaw on Monday afternoon after the incident. One witness reported seeing 'blood on the streets' while police said patrols would be stepped up in the area.
