A single-engine aircraft has crashed into the north side of Dolores Peak in Colorado, prompting a search and rescue operation to determine if there are survivors. The crash occurred on Thursday, and first responders are being flown in by helicopter to the remote site.
Crash site and response
The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is responding to reports of the crash at the mountain peak, located roughly 15 miles southwest of the historic town of Telluride in southwestern Colorado. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
Deputies from the San Miguel Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue operatives, the Bureau of Land Management, and personnel from the Telluride Fire Protection District are all en route in response to the emergency callout.
Search for survivors
It is not yet known whether anyone survived the crash. The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office said in a statement: "A single engine aircraft has crashed on the north side of Dolores Peak approximately 15 miles SW of Telluride."
The statement added: "Teams are being inserted via helicopters to determine if there are survivors."
The rescue operation remains ongoing as emergency crews attempt to reach the remote crash site, with Dolores Peak described as a remote, high-elevation summit surrounded by rugged backcountry terrain.
