Pensioner Accused of Killing Neighbour's Carp in Pond Dispute

A 76-year-old pensioner has been accused of killing his neighbour's three carp by sloshing detergent and motor oil into their pond, following a heated noise dispute, as heard in court proceedings. Gerry Duffy allegedly carried out the acts against Andrea Ptohides, who resides next door on Hadley Road in Barnet, north London, last month.

Noise Complaint Escalates to Alleged Property Damage

Willesden Magistrates' Court was informed that Duffy had visited Ms Ptohides's property to complain about noise emanating from the pond, which he claimed was disrupting his sleep. Prosecutors stated that Duffy had previously threatened to take matters into his own hands if no action was taken to address the issue.

In court on Tuesday, white-haired Duffy spoke only to confirm his personal details and to deny the four charges brought against him. The charges include three counts of damaging property and one count of unlawfully destroying fish.

Sequence of Alleged Incidents

The first alleged incident occurred on March 20, when Duffy is accused of damaging the pond by throwing motor oil into it. Four days later, the complainant discovered that water pipes supplying the pond had been cut.

Prosecutors revealed that Mr Ptohides reviewed CCTV footage from his garden, which allegedly showed Duffy climbing the fence into the garden on that day. On March 26, the alleged victim found three of his carp dead in the pond and believes detergent was poured into it.

The court heard that Mr Ptohides observed on CCTV footage the defendant climbing the fence into the garden between 2.32am and 3.08am on the morning of March 26.

Legal Proceedings and Bail Conditions

Duffy has been granted conditional bail and is scheduled to face trial at Willesden Magistrates' Court on August 4. The case highlights the severe escalation of a neighbourhood dispute, with allegations of property damage and animal harm.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the matter, as the legal process unfolds to determine the veracity of the claims made by both parties involved in this contentious situation.
