Around 100 firefighters were needed to tackle a major blaze that ripped through a department store and storage unit on Rye Lane in Peckham, south London, on Friday morning. Thick black smoke billowed into the air, prompting warnings for local residents to keep windows and doors closed.
Fire Under Control After Intense Effort
Station Commander Craig Abbott, who attended the scene, confirmed the fire is now under control. He stated: 'Firefighters have worked hard and the fire in Peckham is now under control. At the height of the fire, a department store was alight. Crews will remain on scene until the morning to fully extinguish the fire and dampen down remaining hotspots.'
Public Health and Traffic Warnings Issued
Abbott added that a significant amount of smoke was produced, and residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed. Traffic in the area is likely to remain impacted, and members of the public are advised to avoid the area if possible.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the London Fire Brigade. No injuries have been reported at this time.
