A Polish mother who disappeared nearly 15 years ago was murdered, dismembered and buried in bin bags by her girlfriend, a court has heard. Anna Podedworna, 40, is charged with the murder of Izabela Zablocka, 30, between August 27 and October 1, 2010, in Derby.
Prosecutor Gordon Aspden KC told Derby Crown Court that Podedworna killed Zablocka shortly after a phone call to her mother on August 28, 2010. He alleged she then cut the body in half with a large knife, wrapped it in electrical tape, placed it in black plastic bin bags and buried it in the back garden, covering the grave with concrete.
The court heard the two women had a “stormy and turbulent” relationship and had moved from Poland to the UK in 2009, working together at a poultry factory. Zablocka’s family reported her missing in November 2010, and when police spoke to Podedworna, she claimed not to know her whereabouts.
Aspden said the defendant’s cover-up involved “deliberate, calculated, gruesome and time-consuming acts”. He stated that Podedworna only confessed after a Polish journalist interviewed her, but then claimed self-defence – which the prosecution says is a lie. Zablocka’s remains were later found in the garden of their former home in Normanton, Derby.
Podedworna, of Boyer Street, Derby, also faces charges of preventing a lawful burial and perverting the course of justice. The trial continues.
