Nottinghamshire Police has voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following complaints from the families of the three people killed by Valdo Calocane in Nottingham last June. The IOPC will investigate the force's contact with Calocane before the attacks, as well as its handling of the murder investigation.
The complaints allege flaws in the investigation and missed opportunities to prevent the deaths of Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates on 13 June. They also claim the force failed to execute an outstanding arrest warrant for Calocane, issued in September 2022 over an alleged assault of a police officer in 2021, and had poor communication with the families.
IOPC director Steve Noonan expressed sympathy for the families and confirmed the investigation into Nottinghamshire Police, alongside a separate probe into Leicestershire Police, which had earlier referred itself over contact with Calocane in May 2023.
Calocane, who has paranoid schizophrenia, was given a hospital order in January after pleading guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility. The families have welcomed the IOPC review but criticised Nottinghamshire Police for not referring itself earlier, and continue to call for a full public inquiry.
