Fire crews are tackling a ship fire at Newport Docks that is sending plumes of black smoke across the city. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is currently at the scene of the incident, which involves scrap cargo onboard a vessel berthed at the port, according to Associated British Ports (ABP).
ABP said it is working with the fire service and other partner agencies as the emergency response continues. A large amount of smoke is being reported in the area, and at its height, large plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from the ship.
Public advised to avoid area
Anyone affected by the smoke is being advised to close windows and doors, while people are being asked to avoid the area altogether while crews deal with the fire. There is also a heavy smell of smoke being reported across the city.
An Associated British Ports spokesperson said: “We are aware of a fire involving scrap cargo onboard a vessel berthed at the Port of Newport.
“We are working closely with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and other partner agencies as they manage the incident.
“We encourage people to follow the advice of the emergency services and avoid the area while operations remain ongoing.”
Port operations and recent incidents
Newport Docks form part of the commercial Port of Newport, where vessels handle and transport cargo including raw materials and other goods. The port supports shipping, industrial and logistics activity in the city.
The cause of the blaze will be investigated. Emergency services have said the fire is under control. It comes just weeks after a similar fire in Cardiff Bay.
