Newcastle United have taken eight points from their first five Premier League games under new head coach Matthias Jaissle, but the international break gives the club time to repair several lingering issues. A 4-1 defeat at Leeds United and a narrow 2-1 win against Hull City highlighted problems with match control, defensive solidity and squad depth.
Controlling matches better
Despite their positive start, Newcastle have not always kept a firm grip on games. They surrendered a 2-1 lead in the dying stages against Liverpool to draw, struggled in the opening stages against AFC Bournemouth, and were left hanging at 2-1 against Hull after leading 2-0. The result at Leeds speaks for itself after the heavy loss at Elland Road.
Midfield control has been a particular concern. Nico Gonzalez, a key figure in that area, went off with a knock against Leeds and missed the Hull game. Sean Steur provided some protection, but the issue was exposed when the Dutchman went off last weekend. Getting the former Manchester City man fit for the winter will be important, while Joelinton is also due back after the break to bolster the engine room.
The heart of the matter
Newcastle's central defence has sparked debate among fans after conceding sloppy goals. Only Chelsea have conceded more (12) than Newcastle's nine among the Premier League's top 10. Sven Botman had a difficult pre-season with lapses of concentration and has looked vulnerable, including against Leeds. Malick Thiaw has also not had a perfect start, but Dan Burn is close to returning and could stabilise the back four. Fabian Schar's presence was needed at the end of the Hull game, and the team clearly needs help at the back.
More strength in depth
The goalkeeper department was tested when Ewen Jaouen suffered an ankle injury and missed several matches, including the Carabao Cup tie at Millwall. Lukas Hornicek has battled through and made key saves, but keeping Nick Pope on the bench raises questions about the club's stance on keepers. In attack, Yoane Wissa has led the line with Matias Fernandez-Pardo, but William Osula's injury problems have not helped. Osula should return soon, but another forward is being looked at ahead of the next two windows.
Newcastle made a brutal call to loan Nick Woltemade to Juventus, and it is understood he will be sold in the summer if the club finds the right buyer. Moving forward, the focus is on finding players who fit Jaissle's system at St James' Park.
