Firefighters are battling a large warehouse fire in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, with smoke visible for miles. Ten fire engines and specialist appliances were called to Broughton Street in the early hours of Saturday, with the fire ongoing since at least 1am.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) deployed crews who used two hose reel jets, one handheld jet and an aerial appliance to bring the blaze under control. Around 60 firefighters are believed to be at the scene.
Residents have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to thick, low-lying smoke drifting north over Cheetham Hill. Road closures are in place on Broughton Street and Bent Street, and people are urged to avoid the area.
A GMFRS spokesperson said: 'Firefighters arrived quickly and used two hose reel jets, one handheld jet and aerial appliance to bring the fire under control.' The fire involved several single-storey commercial buildings, believed to be warehouses.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that crews remain at the scene this morning, with smoke continuing to affect the area. The cause of the fire is not yet known, and investigations are expected to begin once the blaze is fully extinguished.
