A massive fire has erupted in Newcastle, sparking a significant emergency response with more than 60 firefighters dispatched to battle the blaze. Emergency crews were called to the corner of Denison Street and Maitland Road in the suburb of Mayfield shortly after 3:30 pm on Monday.
Fire Details
Vision from the area shows flames reaching four storeys high, erupting from a whitegoods warehouse situated between homes and apartment buildings. Police established a 200-metre exclusion zone as crowds gathered while fire crews worked to contain the blaze.
The effort was still ongoing around 7:30 pm, though the fire has not spread to other buildings. Road closures are expected to last well into Monday night.
Public Advisory
'Residents within 1 km of the location are urged to close doors and windows to mitigate any smoke, fumes or embers entering their homes,' NSW Police said. 'Motorists are urged to avoid the area.'
Investigation and Impact
What caused the blaze will be the subject of an investigation. There have also been electricity outages in the area, with Ausgrid working to restore services. There are no reports of injuries connected to the fire.
