Royal Navy veteran Paul Slater, 52, died in a three-car crash on the M4 near Newport on Monday, 29 January. The collision involving a Vauxhall Agila, a BMW X4, and a Volkswagen Polo occurred at about 21:00 GMT. Mr Slater was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a tribute released by Gwent Police, his family described him as a "gentle giant" and a "righteous man". Born in Yorkshire, he moved to Wales after marrying his wife Ann from Cardiff. He leaves behind two daughters, Victoria-Rose and Alexandra, who "were his entire world".
Mr Slater served in the Royal Navy for over 22 years before returning home to work for the NHS. His family expressed gratitude to emergency services who tried to help him and appealed for dashcam footage or information.
A 34-year-old Cardiff man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed pending further inquiries.
