A motorcyclist has died following a collision with a car on the Isle of Lewis. Police were called to a crash involving a silver MG and a black BMW S1000 RS motorcycle on the A857 Ness to Stornoway road near New Park, Newmarket, at around 4.40pm on Saturday.
Rider pronounced dead at hospital
Emergency crews attended the scene and the 56-year-old male rider was taken to Western Isles Hospital, where he died. His relatives have been informed, and no other casualties were reported. The road was closed to allow investigations and reopened at around 5am on Sunday.
Man arrested and witnesses sought
A 44-year-old male motorist has been detained in connection with the incident, and officers have confirmed enquiries are ongoing. Police are appealing for witnesses.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died as a result of this crash,” Police Sergeant Scott MacDonald said. “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or the vehicles prior to contact us. I would also ask anyone who was in the area and may have dash cam footage that could assist to get in touch.”
