A motorcyclist has died following a police chase in Edinburgh that ended in a crash. The 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene on Salamander Street in Leith.
Incident details
Police officers attempted to stop the high-powered Yamaha YZF R6 in the Seafield Road area at around 6:36pm on Wednesday. The motorbike failed to stop and was subsequently involved in a collision with another vehicle about a mile away on Salamander Street, at the junction with Bath Road.
The 40-year-old male rider was pronounced dead at the scene, and his next of kin has been informed. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured but was arrested in connection with a road traffic offence, and enquiries are ongoing.
Road closure and investigation
Salamander Street was locked down for around nine hours while investigations were carried out and fully reopened at around 4am. Specialist crash investigators are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened.
Chief Superintendent Helen Harrison said: "My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died, and we will continue to keep them updated on our investigation."
Appeal for witnesses
Police Scotland are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage. Harrison added: "I'm appealing to anyone who saw the collision or was in the area and may have information which could be relevant, to come forward. I'd also ask drivers with dash cams to review their footage for anything which may be significant and bring it to our attention."
