An Ashington councillor is urging the creation of a legal motorbike track to address what residents describe as 'out of control' motorbike disorder in the Northumberland town. Reform UK's Coun Sonia Simm is engaging with local landowners to find a suitable location for a track, following the closure of the previously popular PJMX track at Cambois due to industrial development.
Residents report ongoing issues
Motorbikes have been a persistent problem in the town, particularly in Hirst Park, where incidents have led to accidents and hospitalisations. Coun Simm highlighted a 'Catch 22' situation: while selling motorbikes is legal, there is no legal place for young riders to use them. She noted that many young people seek adrenaline and outdoor activities rather than youth clubs, and a safe space would cater to them.
Nearest track 30 miles away
The nearest alternative for youngsters in south east Northumberland is School House MX in Consett, over 30 miles from Ashington with poor transport links. Coun Simm expressed hope that a new track would be seen as a valuable asset, saying, 'We're at a point now where kids are having accidents and being taken to hospital. This is something really important.'
Police crackdowns and council response
Northumbria Police has launched Operation Capio and Project Shield to combat illegal motorbike, e-bike, and scooter use, relying on local intelligence rather than pursuits to avoid public harm. Northumberland County Council's cabinet member for public safety, Coun Gordon Stewart, welcomed prevention and enforcement measures, encouraging residents to report anti-social behaviour to police or Crimestoppers.
