Minnie Merriman, a nine-year-old girl, has been identified as the victim who died after being found seriously injured in Arbroath. The incident occurred at Elliot Industrial Estate in the early hours of Monday, August 3.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 12:02am, and Minnie was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she sadly passed away a short time later. Three other individuals were also taken to hospital but have since been released.
Arrest and Charges
A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with her death. He is scheduled to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court today. Police Scotland has confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
In a statement issued through Police Scotland, Minnie's family expressed their grief: "We are devastated with the loss of our beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave Minnie Moo. Our family asks that our privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time."
Community Reaction
Local residents have described the incident as "tragic," with many saying the tight-knit community has been left stunned. Bill Smith, an area resident, told the Record: "It's unbelievable. It's all everyone is talking about today as it's incredibly sad. Nobody seems to know what has happened. But it's tragic that a girl so young has lost her life here. There's a path from the houses that goes through the industrial estate down to the shop. It's a busy area through the day."
Councillor Lois Speed, who represents the Arbroath East and Lunan ward, said: "The community is in shock at what has happened. My thoughts are with everyone that has been impacted."
Investigation Details
A substantial police cordon has been established at the location, encircling a grassy patch, footpath, and adjacent carriageway. A blue electric Peugeot with a sunshade covering the front window and a purple throw draped from the rear passenger window was sealed off, and a blue forensic shelter was erected. Reports suggest the vehicle was removed from the scene on Tuesday.
Floral tributes have been left at the estate. Detective Inspector Mike Ness of the Major Investigation Team said: "Our thoughts remain with those affected by these events. A police presence will remain in the area while our inquiries continue.
