Two men were seen carrying rifles in a Gower village in the early hours of Thursday morning, prompting backlash from its community. Members of the public reported hearing shooting in Pennard, within ten to 15 metres of the path of the field from Sandy Lane in the area on Wednesday night. Images have circulated on social media showing two men carrying air rifles in the area.
Police response
South Wales Police say two men, aged 56 and 60, from the Maesteg area, were spoken to at the scene but "no further action was required."
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "Officers were called to the area near Pennard Golf Club, Swansea at around 12.40am on Thursday, August 13 following a report of gunshot sounds heard nearby.
"Two men, aged 56 and 60, and both from Maesteg with legally held air rifles were spoken to. No crime or criminality was identified and no further action was required."
Club statement
Pennard Golf Club has released a statement to say it does not condone acts of shooting on its land.
It said: "In response to the posts and photographs regarding reckless acts of shooting on our land, we would like to make it absolutely clear that Pennard Golf Club does not condone, support or give permission for this type of behaviour on our land.
"The safety of our members, staff, visitors, and the wider public is of paramount importance to us.
"It is extremely difficult to manage and police such vast open spaces, particularly when the Links are legally accessible by the public and have numerous entrances and exit points.
"We take any reports of this nature very seriously and we will continue to work with the appropriate authorities where necessary. We would ask anyone who witnesses suspicious, dangerous or unauthorised activity on the course to report it to the relevant authorities, and, where appropriate, notify the club.
"We appreciate everyone's concern and understanding. The club will not give permission for, or tolerate, dangerous or reckless behaviour on our land."
