Men flee BMW-Mercedes M56 chase after Chester

A BMW reportedly chased a Mercedes through Chester and onto the M56 in a high-speed pursuit, ending with two men fleeing on foot and three arrests.

At around 4.50pm on Monday, October 26, officers received reports about a fail-to-stop crash in the St Oswalds Way area of Chester city centre involving a white BMW 3 Series. Three minutes later, Cheshire Police officers received another report that the same BMW appeared to be involved in a chase with a black Mercedes along Hoole Road.

Pursuit on the M56

Over the next 15 minutes, police received calls reporting that the two vehicles had been seen driving at excessive speeds on the M56. It was also reported that the Mercedes still had its boot open during the pursuit and was now missing a tyre.

At around 5.08pm, a further call was received that both vehicles were currently parked on the hard shoulder of the M56 eastbound close to junction 11. It was also reported that two men had been seen ditching the Mercedes and fleeing on foot into a wooded area at the side of the carriageway.

Arrests and appeals

The BMW, which had left the scene before officers got there, was later located in Warrington. Following the incident, officers arrested a 19-year-old man and a 62-year-old man from Chester on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. A 35-year-old man from Stalybridge, Manchester, was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. They have all been released on unconditional bail.

Police have now released footage of the white BMW chasing the black Mercedes at high speed through Chester, with both cars weaving in and out of traffic. As part of ongoing enquiries into the incident, officers are now appealing to anyone with any relevant information or dashcam video footage to contact them.

Police Constable Tyson Darlington, of the Roads and Crime Unit, said: “We have been conducting a number of enquiries to fully establish the circumstances surrounding what has happened and who is involved. As part of this, we are now appealing to anyone who may have seen either of the vehicles as they made their way out of Chester and on to the M56 to get in touch. We would also like to ask anyone who may have been driving in the city centre, on St Oswalds Way, Hoole Road or on the M56, and may have captured either of the vehicles on any dash camera video footage, to also get in touch.”

Anyone with any information or dash cam footage can contact Cheshire Police via 101, or on the website, quoting incident reference number 26000879017.
