Greater Manchester Police Under Fire After Failing to Protect Jewish Event
Manchester Police Failed to Protect Jewish Event - Starmer

Greater Manchester Police is facing intense scrutiny after officers failed to intervene when pro-Palestinian protesters targeted a Jewish community event in Manchester, prompting strong condemnation from Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

The incident occurred during a meeting organised by the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester at the King David School in Crumpsall. Despite clear intelligence about planned disruptions, police presence was notably inadequate when approximately 40 demonstrators arrived at the venue.

Police Response Under Fire

Attendees reported feeling terrified as protesters banged on windows and shouted abuse, creating an atmosphere of intimidation. Witnesses described how the situation escalated while officers appeared to stand by without taking decisive action.

One community member present at the event revealed: "We were absolutely terrified. The police were just standing there while these people were banging on the windows and shouting. It felt like they were protecting the protesters rather than us."

Political Leaders Voice Outrage

Sir Keir Starmer expressed his profound concern, stating: "I am deeply concerned by the appalling situation in Manchester. There can be no excuse for the failure to maintain safety and public order."

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has demanded a full explanation from police chiefs, emphasising that "every community deserves to feel safe and protected."

Community Trust Shattered

The police force has since apologised, acknowledging their response "fell far below the standards we expect." However, community leaders warn that trust has been severely damaged.

Mark Rowe, the council's vice-president, highlighted the devastating impact: "This has caused immense distress and has shaken the community's confidence in the police's ability to protect them."

The incident has raised serious questions about police preparedness and protection for Jewish communities amid rising tensions related to the Middle East conflict.
